Here’s a local teen who isn’t afraid of a dirty job!
These are pictures of Girl Scout and Batavia High School Junior Lauren Stran. She is an animal lover who heard that the Critter Camp Exotic Pet Sanctuary needed help upgrading their old barn.
Lauren developed a plan, got volunteers involved, then got to work getting the sanctuary up to USDA requirements. That included more than 70 hours of work adding insulation and upgrading the walls and ceiling.
The effort was part of Lauren’s Girl Scout Gold Award Project.

As the director of Critter Camp exotic Pet Sanctuary I didn’t know how we were going to raise the funds and round up the volunteers we needed to complete the barn renovation. We put out a call in our newsletter for a service project and were blessed to have Lauren’s mom respond! We were amazed and thrilled at the dedication and drive that Lauren had for this project!
It always helps renew our faith in mankind when someone goes far and above to do such a fantastic job!
In addition to caring for over 250 abandoned abused exotic pets we also give tours so folks can learn about these unique animals. They can come see first hand the remarkable home the 25 bunnies and 40 guinea pigs now have too!Thank you for spolighting Lauren she is a treasure!
We also made a slideshow on YouTube about the project:
